Setting up your accounts — types, opening balances, the default account — and how current balances are calculated.

The 🏦 Accounts tab lists the places your money is kept: bank accounts, savings, credit cards, cash. Every transaction and transfer is linked to one of them.
A new workbook starts with two example accounts, Main Checking (the default) and Savings, each with an opening balance of 0. Rename them, change them, or add your own.
| Column | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Account Name | A name you recognise, for example Main Checking. This name appears in the Account dropdowns. |
| Account Type | Choose from the dropdown: Checking, Savings, Credit, Cash, Investment or Other. |
| Opening Balance | How much was in the account when you started tracking it. |
| Current Balance (auto) | Calculated for you. Don't type here. |
| Opening Date | The date of the opening balance. |
| Default | Tick the box for the account you use most. |
Current Balance = the opening balance, plus income, minus expenses (from Transactions), plus transfers in, minus transfers out (from Movements).
It updates by itself whenever you add or change a transaction or transfer. To force a refresh, open Accounts in the sidebar and select Recalculate.
- Savings accounts matter for goals: only transfers into or out of a Savings account count toward a goal.
- Credit accounts, like credit cards, are expected to go below zero.
- For any other type, a negative balance usually means something is missing — an income, an opening balance or a transfer. Check your Transactions and Movements.
- Investment is just a label for an account whose balance you record, like any other. MonetrixOS doesn't track holdings or prices.
The account with Default ticked is pre-selected for new transactions. When you type a transaction in the sheet and leave Account empty, the default account is filled in. If no account is ticked, the first account in the list is used.
- In the sidebar, select More, then Accounts. The Accounts tab opens too.
- Select + Add account.
- Fill in the Account name, Type, Opening balance, Opening date and, if you like, tick Default account.
- Select Save.
The Accounts screen also shows your Net balance across all accounts.
You can also add or edit accounts directly in the Accounts tab.
