Analytics & debt payoff

The sidebar's Analytics — spending by category, trends, budget health — and the snowball and avalanche debt payoff planner.

On this page

Analytics is the sidebar's reporting screen. It goes further than the Dashboard tab: you can filter by period, member and account, and drill from a category into its sub-categories. To open it, select More, then Analytics.

Filters and totals

At the top of Analytics, choose what to look at:

  • Period — This month, Last 3 months, Last 6 months, This year or Custom (then set From and To);
  • Member — All, or one household member;
  • Account — All, or one account.

Below the filters, you see your Income, Expense and Net for that selection. The filters stay in place when you open a report, so you can change them without going back.

Then open one of the four reports below.

Spending

Spending — by category, drill to sub-categories.

  • Share of spending — a pie chart of your spending by category.
  • By category — each category with its amount and share. Select a category to see its sub-categories; All categories takes you back.

Spending with no sub-category appears as Uncategorized.

Trends — income vs expense over time.

  • Income vs expense — month by month.
  • Spending trend — how your spending moves from month to month.
  • Net worth — your net worth over the period, from the snapshots in Net Worth History. Until the first snapshot is taken, you see No net-worth snapshots in this period.

Budget health

Budget health — which budgets are over. Each active budget with what you've spent against its limit, and the percentage used. See Budgeting.

Debt payoff

Debt payoff — a snowball or avalanche plan. It shows how to pay off your loans fastest by putting every spare amount on one loan at a time.

  1. Choose a strategy:
    • Snowball — smallest balance first. Paying off small loans quickly frees up their payments sooner.
    • Avalanche — highest rate first. This usually costs the least interest.
  2. Optionally, enter an Extra per month — an amount you can add on top of your usual payments.
  3. Read the plan: the Payoff order, the number of Months until you're Debt-free, the Total interest, and for each loan what you owe now and what you pay each month.

How it works: every month, each loan gets its Monthly Payment and a month of interest from its Interest Rate. The extra amount — plus the payments of loans already paid off — goes to the loan the strategy puts first. The plan starts from each loan's Remaining Balance today; the period, member and account filters don't apply to it.

If you see These payments never clear the debt — the interest outpaces them. Add an extra amount per month., your payments don't cover the interest. Enter an amount in Extra per month, or check the monthly payments and interest rates on the Loans tab.
